CONDUIT SETTING
In construction, conduit is a pipe used to protect wiring or any other vulnerable construction product or component. Most conduit is rigid, but flexible conduit may be used in some applications.
Metal conduit is sometimes still used, but polyethylene, polystyrene or PVC are now the preferred conduit material because of the low cost, ease of installation and corrosion resistance.
Backfilling Utility Trenches
Backfilling trenches that contain utility lines such as electrical conduit requires special considerations and specialized techniques. At J&R, we consult with professional electricians to ensure that all of our work conforms to municipal regulations.
Standard recommendations for backfilling utility trenches include:
- Trenches must be filled in a timely manner to protect the pipe from exposure to the elements
- Select backfill materials that are compatible with protecting the integrity of the conduit
- Fill the lower portion of the trench by depositing approved backfill and bedding material
- Compact bedding material with suitable tampers to the density of the adjacent soil
- Take special care not to damage conduit and conduit coatings, and cover with not less than 12 inches of approved backfill
- Backfill the remainder of the trench with material that is free of large stones
- Compaction as per engineer’s direction
